Magnesium is one of the three minerals in Australia that is deficient in our soils and therefore many of us are already deficient, even if we are eating a perfect wholesome organic diet. If our soil is deficient in a mineral, so too will our fruit and vegetables become deficient. Magnesium ions are essential to all living cells and are the 11th most abundant element by mass in the human body.
Magnesium is needed in the body:
- To maintain normal muscle and nerve tissue
- To support the immune system
- To keep bones strong
- For energy metabolism and protein synthesis
- To regulate blood sugar levels
- To maintain blood pressure
- For a healthy functioning heart
- Also helpful with PMT and period pain
Magnesium is a component of chlorophyll and therefore found in all green leafy vegetables. Beans, legumes and peas, nuts (especially almonds and cashews) and seeds, whole unrefined grains (especially oatmeal) all contain good sources of magnesium. Magnesium is absorbed from these foods via the small intestine. If the small intestine is insufficiently working (e.g. malabsorption or disease), absorption will be impaired. Colloidal Magnesium starts being absorbed even before it hits the stomach, let alone the small intestine. As soon as the tiny ions touch the mucosal lining of the mouth, they are being absorbed.
Colloidal Magnesium can be taken internally or rubbed on the skin externally, as the colloid will be absorbed straight into the blood stream.
