Slippery Elm Powder is made from the dried and ground inner bark of the Elm tree (Ulmus Rubra), a native of North America. It has been valued as a herbal remedy for centuries. Native Americans traditionally used Slippery Elm in healing salves and poultices for wounds, boils, ulcers, burns, and skin inflammation. On contact with water, Slippery Elm Powder becomes mucilaginous (gel-like) in texture which accounts for the majority of its medicinal properties. Mucilage is the most abundant constituent of Slippery Elm Bark, but the tree also contains starch, sugar, calcium, iodine, bromine, amino acids, and traces of manganese and zinc. It is recommended by naturopaths and herbalists for its soothing action on all mucous membranes including those of the digestive tract, urinary and respiratory tract and it also soothes the skin.
Slippery Elm makes an excellent drink to provide relief from indigestion, sore throats and coughs.
Be sure to drink plenty of water when taking Slippery Elm as it is able to absorb many times its own weight in water and may rob the body of fluid.
